Journeyman Beekeeper Week Two

Chapter 1, Part Three – Brood Rearing, Food Production, and Colony Behavior (pp. 19-24)
Honey bees are a superorganism in which the division of labor is specialized and in which individuals can’t survive on their own. Individuals in a superorganism function together as a unit. One of the most important functions within a superorganism is care of the brood. The beekeeper should understand the developmental stages of the brood to properly assess the queen’s fecundity.

Chapter 2, Part One – Honey Bee Diseases   (pp. 25-32)
Knowledge of botany and bee biology permits beekeepers to anticipate bee responses to environmental conditions and the biological cycles in both plants and bees. Skillful beekeepers manage their colonies by anticipating seasonal cycles. Beekeepers should be planning for what will come next, rather than reacting to what is happening or has already happened – anticipation, not reaction. Skillfully applying biological knowledge allows beekeepers to anticipate colony development and needs
