Journeyman Beekeeper Week Four
  Integrated Pest Management is not a process limited to the proper use of chemicals to control pests. Rather it is the Beekeeper’s sole obligation to establish a method that provides a responsible solution for protecting each other the environment and our interest the honeybee.
  While a beekeeper might think that addressing a threat to a colony means treating with chemicals, they fail to understand that Integrated Pest Management starts with addressing the appropriate action to identify the real problem.

  Too often beekeepers over-manage colonies. Beekeepers have a responsibility to manage the hives, not work the hives. The bees do the work, so staying out of the hives and not disrupting their progress is just as important as conducting inspections, taking appropriate action, and preparing for the season to come. Knowing when to disturb the colony and look inside and when to stay out, is the true test of an experienced beekeeper.
