Apprentice Beekeeper Week One

Chapter 1 – Bee Hives, Protective Clothing, Tools, and Site (pg. 9-19)
This chapter presents a basic overview of the honey bee as an insect, the subspecies of honey bees that are most known in North America, and its eusocial characteristics as reflected in colony behavior. Having a good understanding of the attributes of the Family to which the honey bee belongs helps to understand its behavior and how it interacts naturally with its environment. Recognizing normal behavior helps to highlight when something isn’t normal.

Chapter 3 – Equipment/Clothing (pg. 27-34)
Most all popular hive designs are meant to help the beekeeper with inspections and harvesting honey, and while this is important, the designs aren’t necessarily meant to help support the natural behavior of the honey bee. With that in mind, knowing what physical limitations you have, the time that you have to monitor and work your hives, and how much money you want to invest in the woodenware for your hives needs to be considered. This also includes the tools and protective clothing that you will use.
