Journeyman Beekeeper Week One

Honey Bee Biology

Chapter 1, Part One – The Science of Genetics and Characteristics of Six Subspecies (pp. 5-12)
     This chapter starts by discussing the classification and eusocial characteristics of the honey bee. We will then examine the genetic makeup of the honey bee through the haploid and diploid development process within the colony.  Afterwards, we will look at the characteristics of six subspecies by identifying their pros and cons.

    Please read Chapter 1, part 1 pp.5-12 as well as review the video and other material for this chapter. Please feel free to leave comments or ask questions during the Q&A time on the Zoom Meeting. There will be a timed quiz following the review.
Chapter 1, Part Two – Anatomy, (pp. 12- 24)
   In Chapter 1, part 2 we will look at the anatomic makeup of the honey bee breaking down their body structure into three parts.  We will examine each of these body parts gaining a deeper understanding of the function of each.
